Following the original inspiration for a new work, Mary Ann Baker begins the "sketching" process by developing the design in a 3D modeling program. The use of the 3D modeling allows for a broad
range of exploration and visualization prior to any fabrication.
Each shape can be molded and constructed as if using hard materials,
but without the expenditure and commitment.
Colors and textures can
be applied, modified and refined. As the design progresses, a 3D
rendering can be placed in the desired location for further
evaluation and refinement. This digital or virtual creative process
enables Mary Ann Baker to complete works of the very highest
quality. This process also enables clients to engage in the process
and be completely satisfied prior to the fabrication of the finished
piece.
Once the digital image has been completed, Mary Ann Baker proceeds to the fabrication process.
Depending on the material, this involves translating the 3D image into file sources that can be utilized in plasma cutting, water jet cutting, CNC forming, 3D foam molding, etc.

This utilization of the digital files not only enables precise
construction of the finished work, but scaling the work up or down is
a simple process of scaling the working digital files.

The beauty of combining computer skills with hands on sculpting enables Mary Ann Baker to fully explore her creativity and enables her to share her joy of sculpting with others.
